problem - solution report for global warming (Task 7)

One of the important issues nowadays is global warming. Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the earth’s near-surface air and oceans. Temperatures increase because the amount of greenhouse gases and air pollution is increasing during the time.

There is much evidence that tells us that there are problems with global warming. First, people don’t fully understand what global warming is, so people should be educated to know how they could reduce the factors of global warming. In addition CO2 is the main reason for global warming. “Fossil fuel burning has produced about three-quarters of the increase in CO2 from human activity over the past 20 years” (http://en.wikipedia.org/). Another problem is ice melting around the world. The result of ice melting is horrible. The result is that the level of water increases which leads to flooding in many countries of the world. “In recent years, the global average sea level has been rising 0.25 to 0.5 centimeters, or 1 to 2 inches, a year”( http://healthandenergy.com/sea_level_rising.htm)

On the other hand there are some solutions we can do to help stop global warming. First, CO2 commissions should be reduced by cars, factories and cities. We can reduce the amount of CO2 by using biofuel cars, but there is not enough encouragement from government and companies which produce these cars. Another solution would be to build cities like Cool cities. “From hybrid vehicle fleets in Charlotte, to green buildings in Austin, and homes powered with renewable energy in Seattle, local governments are moving forward with innovative energy solutions that curb global warming, save taxpayer dollars, and create healthier cities” (http://www.coolcities.us/)

In conclusion I should say that everyone is responsible for what is going on in our planet, so we have to educate people more about global warming. Because we live in one planet and there is no alternative place to live in.

Cool city ( Task 6)

There are some problems with economic development since the industrial revolution such as population increase, CO2 emissions and traffic congestion. However if we don’t solve these problems we will need another planet to live which is totally impossible. In addition we have to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide by 50% in the air.

In the last 30 years GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in Japan has rocketed by 100%, while oil consumption has fallen 8% and energy efficiency increased by 37%.

Two things which mainly cause carbon dioxide, 90% into the air are buildings and transportation.

Cool City is an environmentally friendly city which tries to decrease the CO2 emissions into the air. The city is built by SDCJ which is a Japanese company. Cool City has three types of transportation, water taxis, hybrid cars and light transit rail. There are also three main zones in the city which are business, commercial/cultural and residential (where people live). Some of the techniques which are followed by the city to reduce heat are tree-planting, waterways and rooftop membranes. From the two types of the building it is expected CO2 reduction of 50% in eco towers and 30% in eco residences. Finally the general reduction of CO2 emissions will reach 60%.

Opinion

In my opinion I think that the Cool city is an excellent city because it focuses on the environment and things related to our planet like carbon dioxide and pollution. I believe that other countries around the world should build cities like Cool city, so we can live a good healthy life, but there is no care of our planet. I hope there will be a change of thinking to build cities like Cool city.

How Europe can save the world

Summary

The European Union is looking to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions. However the European Union plans to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide by 20% by 2020, and consider the renewable resources like water, air and tidal power.
After 2010 every new power station should have carbon capture storage technology. This will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide. On the other hand there are problems with the renewable resources, like it is expensive and not all the countries can afford it. Some countries like France are using nuclear power which uses less carbon dioxide.

Main idea

The European Union countries have to work together in order to keep the life good for European countries. The European Union has to work hard to reach its goal to reduce global greenhouse gases. The EU committed to use more renewable resources like water, air and tidal power.

Opinion

I think that the topic is important because it talks about our planet and how the countries work with each other to reduce pollution. However if all countries in the world meet together and discuss the issue it will be better because other countries like USA, India and China also have an impact on our planet. As a result all countries could understand each other and look for the solution.

Natural Residents

Part 1
The summary:

There is a place in Sweden called Turning Torso. This place is located in the vicinity of the green area and beautiful nature. Not just people live there, but there are lots of living organisms such as birds, insects, bats and sedum-covered roofs. Malmo city is one of the examples of developments designed to promote sustainable urban living. There are 1300 apartments in the first phase called Bo01. These apartments create new ways of renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable transport.
Annika Kruuse who was employed as Area Ecologist to monitor progress of Bo01 explains how they manage the place for animals which live there. She says that there are some species which have moved to the Western Harbour. Some seabirds have moved to Bo01 such as blackbird, white wagtail and the common gull.
The developers are planning to build two more development phases like the Bo01. The developers say this will attract people to buy these departments. As a result people will be more aware of green credentials. It is important to encourage our children to live in houses designed to promote sustainability and biodiversity. Malmo is a great example of how to keep the natural life and it is a first step towards incorporating biodiversity as standard in town planning.

Part 2
Main idea:

People should think about the environment and be more aware. There are a lot of efforts to build and maintain the rights of nature, and care more about the plants and green areas because the plants are an important part in our lives. We have to educate our children to love nature and animals, and we must think about the future.

Part 3
Opinion:

* I think this article is important and useful because it is connected with our lives and environment.
* We have to encourage the developments like Turning Torso in Sweden and Malmo because it will help our planet to face the changes in the world.
* I suggest other countries in the world should follow projects like Turning Torso in Sweden and Malmo to keep our environment green and beautiful.

Carbon foot print ( Task 5 )

I measured my footprint at http://footprint.wwf.org.uk/ and it was 3.10.
Most of the class students have almost the same footprint numbers. The average footprint numbers for CRE was nearly 3.66. Modeled on the three most important due to me is stuff by 32%, travel 26% and home 23%.
A carbon footprint is the total set of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product. The statistics show that the UAE has the highest footprint per capita.

What can I do to reduce my carbon footprint?

Stuff is the biggest contributor to my footprint. However I don’t think that I really spend a lot on stuff. I bought a washing machine but I can’t live without washing my clothes! Talking about the transportation, I drive my own car to move from one place to another. In addition it takes me 10 minutes to reach college and I don’t think that it would reduce the amount of greenhouse gases even if I used public transportation like buses and trains. One idea to reduce greenhouse gases is to provide buses for employees who work in the same place. As a result it will reduce the amount of greenhouse gases.

About travel; I travel every three years to eastern Asia and sometimes I travel every two years it depends on the situation and work.

I live in semi-detached villa in Abu Dhabi. However the next door to us is very noisy people. This is one thing related to pollution.

Review of An Inconvenient Truth ( Task 4 )

(Positive point)
A.O.Scott,

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/24/movies/24trut.html?_r=1&ex=1180065600&en=42220907b0fd919b&ei=5083&partner=Rotten%20Tomatoes
says that:
* Such a film has never been made before and it talks about the danger of climate changes.
* The film is not about Al Gore, but it considers the climate changes and global warming.
* The photographs of temperature increase and the rate of carbon-dioxide emissions were horrible and shocking.
* The ice melting images and the expected water increases in the coastal areas is a worrying matter.

(Negative point)
Tony Medley, http://www.tonymedley.com/2006/An_Inconvenient_Truth.htm
says that:
* The film is totally rubbish science and Al Gore is trying to be a responsible man towards the climate changes.
* Al Gore in this film is very kind, has lots of knowledge and gets respect from the audience. However in 2000 Al Gore was angry and not kind.
* There is no proof that man is actively causing global warming.
* The film talks about Gore’s personal life and it is not connected with the subject of the film.

(Opinion)
I agree with Scott that such a film has never been made before and it talks about the danger of climate changes because it is the first film I have seen which talks about the global warming. The film focuses on the climate changes in the world. However I disagree with Tony Medley that the film is rubbish science because the film shows the reality of the climate changes around the world. In addition the climate has changed in many countries around the world.

An Inconvenient Truth

An Inconvenient Truth shows Al Gore and his travels in support of his thinking to educate the public about the severity of the climate changes. The film closely follows a Keynote presentation (dubbed "the slide show") that Gore presented throughout the people. It intersperses Gore's collection of data and predictions regarding climate change and its potential for disaster with Gore's life story about his sister who died because of lung cancer. In the slide show, Gore shows the scientific realities of climate changes, talks about the economics and politics that are connected with global warming, and describes the results he believes global climate change will produce if the amount of human-generated greenhouse gases is not dramatically reduced in the very near future. A main point of the film is his example of the annual temperature and CO2 levels for the last 650,000 years in Antarctic ice core samples.

I think that the movie is very useful. There are many excellent figures and information, and it talks about the realities of global warming. The solution is in our hands, as is well known and the solution is not to pollute the environment. The major industrial countries have to consider this matter well and see this movie to see the truth and what’s happening in the world.

global warming

The global warming is one of the important issues nowadays. Global warming means that the temperature of the earth is increasing. One of the main reasons of temperature increase is the greenhouse gases. Before the twentieth century there was no increase in temperature, but in the middle of the twentieth century the temperature began to increase because of gases from the factories and cars. It is expected that the temperature over the next fifty or one hundred years will increase; the earth may be hotter than millions of years before. That means the global warming will affect the plants, weather, animals and humans, so why are we cutting down forests? Burning fuels? Although we know this is bad for our planet we still do the same thing. The results of global warming are sea levels are increasing and cities along the coast may be flooded. High temperatures may cause forests to die and food crops to fail.

About my self

My name is Saeed Ali Al Shehhi. I am 20 years old. I was born in Abu Dhabi in 1989; I am a student at ADMC. I like to travel a lot and know about other cultures. I am the third son in the family. When I was a child I dreamed of becoming a famous actor; of course it did not happen. I dreamt about this because I was very interested in Indian films. I traveled to India several times and enjoyed it very much. India is really a very beautiful country and it has a lot of scenic places, museums and archaeological places. India is known as one of the oldest civilizations. In my free time I play football or play table tennis and often watch television. I wish to speak French because it is spoken by many people around the world. Many African countries speak French until this day. I hope that I will go on a tour around the world and visiting places I want to visit. I want to enjoy the life. It is my nature to help people in need. I still remember the day I went with my father when I met Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and will not forget that no matter how I lived; you felt satisfied and very glad when you meet him.

In our blog project, Hedley is encouraging us to think critically and analytically about the issues of climate change and global warming. . It is very important issue because it’s connected with our lives and our planet where we live. In my blog I will explain how to reduce climate change and global warming.
